Let’s learn how to solve one step equations using multiplication!
Now, in our previous lesson, we learn how to solve an equation using addition or subtraction. But these types of equations all had one thing in common – the number in front of the variable was a positive one.
So what do we do when the leading coefficient is a number other than one?
- Recognize that the operation between the coefficient and the variable is multiplication.
- Remember that the inverse operation is division (or multiplying by the reciprocal).
Now here’s a neat trick to remember!
If the coefficient is an integer, then just divide both sides by that number.
If the coefficient is a fraction, then multiply both sides by the reciprocal.
Together we will walk through 21 examples of Solving One-Step Equations using Multiplication or Division where we will master identifying how to solve equations using the steps listed above.
Don’t forget that our overall goal is always to isolate the variable!
To do this, we will just rely on our multiplication and division skills.
Additionally, we will ensure that we arrived at the correct answer by simply evaluating the problem at the end. All we have to do is plug our answer into the original equation and make sure that it balances out, or makes the equation true as Purple Math states.
