Did you know that the word “literal” means being comprised of letters?
So that means that a formula is nothing more than a literal equation!
And Literal Equations, or formulas, are helpful because they allow us to plug in values and viola out pops the answer we are looking for.
For example, let’s say we are trying to find out how long it will take us to get to the beach.
We know the distance, let’s say it’s 200 miles, and we are aware how fast we can travel on the highway, about 60 miles per hour.
Now, all we have to do is plug both of these numbers into the given formula, and we can solve to find out how long it will take us to arrive at our destination.
But wouldn’t it have been easier if the formula was already equal to time, t?
That’s why it’s important to know how to transform equations before we plug in and evaluate.
And that is exactly what we’re going to do in this lesson; we are going to be solving formulas for specific variables.
Solving formulas, or literal equations, is just another way of saying take an equation with lots of letters and solve it for one letter in particular, as Purple Math so nicely states.
Together we are going to work through a ton of examples, to ensure mastery and understanding of solving Literal Equations.
