Probability is the measure of how likely it is for an event to occur, and conditional probability is the likelihood of an event occurring, given another event has already occurred.
But to fully understand what all of this means, it’s important to learn the terminology and the notation involved in calculating probability.
We will begin with Venn Diagrams and learn the notation for the intersection and union of two sets. Then we will calculate the probability for single events to take place by understanding that we represent probability as a fraction, decimal or percent ranging between 0 and 1 ( 0% to 100%), where 0 means an event can’t happen and 1 means it’s a sure thing.
Next, we will learn the meaning of dependent events, independent events, and mutually exclusive events. We will also learn how to find the probability of events A and B as well as the probability of events A or B.
Then we will tackle conditional probability or how probable one event is given that some other event occurred, as Statistics How To nicely states.
We will utilize Venn Diagrams, Tree Diagrams and Tables to calculate the probability, all while using correct notation and easy tricks in remembering the right formulas.
Calculating probability for independent events has never been easier, and will help you in your future studies of prob-stat!
Did you know that the internet uses conditional probability to give you topics related to the one you are looking for? As Math is Fun accurately states, your search engine may not know have the exact result you are looking for, but it uses the results from what other people are looking for that are similar to yours. And this is the central idea of conditional probability!
Together we will not only learn the basics of probability and conditional probability but will expand our knowledge to tackle complex problems found in most college level and AP Statistics courses.
